Orphan Black – Review

Hello people!

I haven’t written for this blog in months but now I’m here to describe one of my best experiences in terms of TV series at the moment.

The chosen one is Orphan Black, which is Bill’s recommendation… and I’m loving it!

orpahn black

Orphan Black is a Canadian science fiction series created by Graeme Manson and produced by Temple Street in association with BBC America.

Note: There are no spoilers here, OK?

Let’s talk about it!

The series begins with our protagonist, Sarah Manning, witnessing a woman, Beth Childs, who seems to be her twin sister, committing suicide.

Sarah takes on Beth’s identity and occupation as a police detective after Beth’s death. During the series, Sarah discovers that she has more twin sisters that were originated from a mysterious cloning research.

Unfortunately, Sarah will not have an easy life after taking Beth’s identity. She’ll be facing a lot of troubles and she has a mission – to protect her sisters and her daughter, Kira.

All the clones should be sterile by design but Sarah isn’t, and because of that, a mysterious evil corporation is after her.

In terms of acting, Sarah and all of the other clones are played by Tatiana Maslany. She is an incredible actress. It seems there are different people playing each clone, even when one pretends to be another, we can notice that is a clone pretending.

Sounds complicated? You`ll have to see it to believe it.

Public Transportation – Japanese Reporter

According to wikipedia Tokyo has one of the biggest rail systems in the world. You can literally go to any place in the city by public transport. It is by far the fastest way to reach any destination, and the most reliable one. They have so many lines you can easily get confused when choosing the lines you need to pick up to go from one place to another:

The metro map

The metro map

The railway map

The railway map

So how you can find the best route? Piece of cake. There are several mobile apps, or web pages that do that for you. And the best thing is that the arrival time of the trains are very accurate so you can schedule transfers(norikae) between lines very smothly.
You can use this site: http://www.jorudan.co.jp/english/
Or this other one if you know how to read Japanese: http://transit.yahoo.co.jp/
There are many other more sophisticated sites/applications that you can even setup your walking pace so it calculates the time from the distance between the stations, and also the distance until your final destination in the map, like in google maps, just search to find one that is most suitable for you.
The public transportation is a very serious business in Japan. They are very strict about the time. One proof of this is the train delay certificates(chien shoumeisho). It is a certificate given by the rail company usually when the train is delayed by more than 5 minutes.
Typical train delay certificate

Typical train delay certificate

Nowadays you can also download from the internet, avoiding paper wasting. This is used to justify arriving late at work or any appointment, and it will be accepted as excuse without any further questions.
Those delays, by the way. in rush hours can cause some the famous scene of the train staff pushing the passengers inside the wagon.

There is always space for one more!
You can go to almost any place in Japan by train, it is very convenient, reliable and in most cases comfortable. If you ever go to Japan, don’t miss the wonderful experience of getting a ride on one of their railroad lines!
Vocabulary:
乗り換え – norikae – transfer
遅延証明書 – chien shomeisho – delay certificate
電車 – densha – train
地下鉄 – chikatetsu – subway/metro
切符 – kippu – ticket
駅 – eki – station

Interesting sports – A curious type of rugby

24 Aug

Pamela_Gnutzmann

by Pamela

Following my posts about weird sports, this time I’ll talk about an interesting version of Rugby. I found out about this sport last week, when a friend who plays in my old team shared it with the words “This the strangest rugby version I have ever heard about”. So I thought, why not..?

Have you ever imagined that someone would have the brilliant idea to play rugby inside a swimming pool? Well, somebody did. The Underwater Rugby was born on Germany, in 1960 and nowadays it is a recognized modality, part of The World Underwater Federation.

The sport is played inside a swimming pool with a depth of 3.5m to 5m and variable width and length. A blue and a white team, each with 6 players, play for 30 minutes, split in two times of 15 minutes each.

The teams score “goals” instead of “tries” and the ball’s shape is similar to a soccer one. Despite that facts, the name rugby suits the sport because of the huge amount of physical contact on it. The teams have to cross the pool with a ball fulfilled with saltwater, passing it in any direction but without letting it leave the water. The points are scored by putting the ball into the adversary goal (heavy metal buckets with a diameter of about 40 cm) at the bottom of the swimming pool.

On the first week of August, the X. CMAS UWR World Championships took place in Santiago De Cali, Columbia. The ladies from Germany have overcome Norway at the final, being the best among seven teams from all over the world. The men from Norway had more success, defeating Germany and winning the gold medal which was disputed by a total of 12 teams.

Neither England nor Brazil participated in the competitions.

Movie Review – Despicable Me 2

Hi folks, it’s movies time!!

A few days ago I decided to re-watch Despicable Me 2 because it was being recommended for me by Netflix. I love animation and as the new movie about the Minions just came out, I thought it would be a very good way to finish my day.

So, in this sequence from Despicable Me, we have a former villain, Gru, trying to adapt to his new life as a single parent of 3 girls. Along with his Minions, Gru cooks, educates, plays, and dresses like a princess in order to please Agnes, Margot and Edith.

more-minions-despicable-me

Although Gru isn’t a bad guy anymore, others are taking his place and because of that the AVL, Anti-Villain League, comes to light. The AVL is a top-secret organization that is dedicated to combating super-villain activity. And impressed by the action of an unknown villain, the league ask Gru’s help to catch this bad guy.

Homesick for his action-packed life, with a lot of guns and experiments and inventions, Gru decides to help the AVL. With this decision he also gains a partner, Lucy Wilde, a very curious woman that will give you plenty of laughs.

gru

And of course,  we can’t forget the Minions! Again, with their yellow colour, their strange language, different costumes and dances, they provide the best moments of the movie and also the success on Gru’s mission.

Personal opinion: Well what can I say… I love animation! And I loved the first Despicable Me. And I was pretty sure that with this sequences would be not different. This is a film for the whole family: there is action, there is love, there is comedy! One more time the Minions were responsible of natural laughs even more because of some new costumes that the used in this film, like the maid costume. So cute and so funny! I’m anxious to watch the movie dedicated to them… I already had a great time watching the trailer.

So, if you want to spend some time with some funny stuff, Despicable Me 2 is a great option. (ps: I totally recommend you to watch Despicable Me first, because you will get the sequence story more easily 😉 )

To hell with that childlike sense-of-wonder crap: Despicable Me, instead of trying to return adults to a false state of innocence, reminds us that we all started out as ill-mannered little savages.”Movieline Stephanie Zacharek

AMIGO-DA-ONÇA

Lit. friend of the jaguar.

  • A supposedly good friend, but actually one who is false and hypocritical.

Que amigo-da-onça que você é!

A fine friend you are!

TIPS & NOTES
Amigo-da-oncaHyphenated, compound nouns like amigo-da-onça sometimes form the plural by putting the first word only in the plural. So…

Amigo-da-onça – plural – amigos-da-onça.

Pai-de-santo – Lit. father of saind – or mãe-de-santo – Lit. mother of saint – male and female high priests in Umbanda and Candomblé religions

Plural: pais-de-santo and mãe-de-santo.

The basic rules for the plurals of compound nouns are as follows:

  • Only the first word takes a plural when there is a preposition between the words. For example:
Pé-de-moleque – Lit. young boy’s foot  – peanut brittle candy.
Plural: pés-de-moleque – peanut brittle candies.
  • Both words take a plural form when the separete parts are different and can stand alone. For example:
    Segunda-feira – Monday
    Plural: segundas-feiras – Mondays.
  • Only the last word takes a plural form in the following two cases:
    1. When the first word is a verb. For example:
      Beija-flor – hummingbird
      Plural: beija-flores – hummingbirds.
    2. When the first word cannot be changed or when it is a prefix. For example:
      Abaixo-assinado – signed petition
      Plural: abaixo-assinados – signed petitions
      Ex-govrenador – ex-governor
      Plural: ex-governadores – ex-govrenors.

Hello Everyone!

Danilo here to bring you the latest news on cricket.

England has regained the ashes! I repeat, England has regained the ashes!

If you’ve been following my posts, you must know the ashes are a series of 5 matches.
Last week England and Australia battled for the fourth time in the series at Trent Bridge, Nottinghamshire. England won the first and third matches and they needed a victory to regain the ashes and they didn’t disappointed. What a match!
I’ll tell a little bit about what happened.

England won the coin toss and decided to bowl first and something magical happened. Australia was dismissed for 60 runs in just 111 balls. It was the shortest innings in a Test match in history.
Stuart Broad took five wickets from 19 balls, the fastest five-for-in in history, he’s at the top with E. Toshack from Australia, 1947 at the Gabba.
Australia was out before lunch and England started batting. On day two, England declared on 391 runs for 9 wickets, it was time for Australia to bat again. With a target of 331 runs just to even the score, they had much (a lot of) work to be (get) done, but England bowled so well that they didn’t stand a chance. Australia second innings ended 253 all out and England beats Australia by an innings and 78 runs securing the ashes.

Here’s a link to a Recap of what happened – 3 min long.

Highly recommended for people who wants to improve their listening skills 😉

Next and final match will be held at The Oval, London next Thursday, stay tuned.

See ya!

Book Review – Sharp Objects

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

In my last trip to Londrina, my hometown, I finished reading the most difficult book I have ever read in English: Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. It was the most difficult because there were a lot words, really a bunch of them, that I have never even seen before. Even with a load of new words I could understand the whole story without any problems. Actually, it was a bit difficult at the beginning. But after some chapters I got the book’s flow and each chapter became easier than the one before. The amount of different words was the same, but it was getting easier to keep reading the book and the story was making me curious to find out the ending.
The story is about a girl, actually a woman, that was around 30 years old. Her name is Camille Preaker and she leaves in Chicago, USA. She is criminal newspaper journalist and she works in a small newspaper company. At some point in time there are some serial murders occurring in her hometown, Wind Gap, and she travels there to write an article about what is happening there.
During the whole book she investigates a load of people, trying to find out who is the murderer and why he/she is doing such horrible things. Also, during the time in her hometown the story describes how the relationship with her mother (Adora) is not good and tells how her sister died young and how her mother was always taking care of her during illnesses. In the mean time, the book also describes how her other half-sister Amma, 13 years old, is popular there and the different personality she has.

SPOILER
In case you would like to read this book, I suggest you stop reading from on, because I am going to tell the story’s ending.

Camille finds out her mother was responsible for her sister’s death. Actually, her mother tried to do the same with her and was also trying to do the same with Amma. She had a serious psychological problem that she only felt loved useful when a child was sick. The feeling a child has when it’s sick, to need being cared for made her feel like she could do anything. She would even give force medications to get her children sick and worst everyday. The need for this weird feeling was so strong that she could not stop giving those medications to her children until their death.

Her mother was not the serial killer, though, that was her sister. Because of her mother’s mental condition, her sister also developed a serious psychological problem. She had the need to be the center of attentions. If someone was important to her, like her mother, was taking care of someone else or paying more attention someone else other than her, she would anything to get the focus back to her. She would even be willing to kill that person. And that is what happened to those poor girls: they had more attention at some point in time and her solution was killing them.

When the murders were solved, both her mother and sister were arrested and Camille had to write about it. What makes it even worst is that she had to write about her own family murder stories…

Brazil through gringo-eyes: The mother of all traffic jams

30 Jul

kristof

by Kristof

Yes, the traffic situation in Florianópolis could use some improvement, to say the least. Most of the important transit roads between the various areas of the city are narrow, often with only one lane in each direction. On top of that, there are little or no alternative roads you can use when traffic on the main road is getting exceptionally bad. The city’s population has been booming in the last decade, especially with those gringos moving in from all over the world and ruining the place for us manezinhos. The transit system is not built to deal with this kind of population growth, which results in a lot of traffic-related frustration.

It may be a small consolation, but things can always be worse. Traffic in my own home country isn’t too great either: roads are often in a poor state, various long-lasting road works and deviations can turn your morning commute or a simple trip for an afternoon of shopping into an ordeal that will leave you stressed and frustrated. The ring road around Antwerp, Belgium’s second largest city has been a problem area for decades. With several highways coming together, it’s a major traffic hub for Belgium and neighboring countries and the road just doesn’t have the capacity to handle the flood of cars and trucks during peak hours. Add this to the fact that the ring isn’t actually complete (it’s open on 1 side!) and it makes the whole thing a bit shameful.

antwerp

A few weeks ago, however, things really got out of hand. It was a long weekend with some sunny weather predictions, so it was an ideal weekend for a trip with the family. The already existing problems combined with the increased traffic and road works – that were inexplicably done during the day, instead of at night – that closed off 3 of the 4 lanes, created the perfect storm of traffic chaos. Many tourists from the Netherlands and Germany as well as Belgium had to pass by Antwerp on their way to the coast or other holiday destinations and ended up stranded in traffic for up to 3(!) hours. As the day progressed, people started to become dehydrated. Some started to feel unwell or even faint. Emergency services were called and ambulances were sent to help the people in need. The Red Cross also tried to distribute water. Tried, because even that went wrong: As more and more cars joined the traffic jam, people found nothing better, but to use the emergency lanes, effectively blocking them for the emergency vehicles they are meant for. It was reported that it took an ambulance almost 45 minutes to reach a person in need.

So, you can see a bit of slow traffic on Beira-Mar Norte isn’t the worst thing that could happen. Next time you’re in stuck traffic in Florianópolis, try not to get wound up too much, but instead remember this heartwarming story and sigh with relief that you’re not stranded for half a day on your way to some relaxing destination, with your whole family crammed into hot and small car, while your children are complaining that they’re hungry and thirsty and your grandmother starting to feel faint and you have to wait 45 minutes for anyone to come give her some water, because the car next to you decided it was ok for him to use the emergency lane. And if that’s not enough to relax you, you can turn your head 90 degrees and take the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful sunset behind the mountains on the continent.

Mortal Kombat X – Part 2

27 Jul

guga

by Lucas

Hello everybody, here we are for Mortal Kombat X – Part 2!

first

In this post, we’re going to cover some basic concepts of the attack types available in the game:

  • High: attacks that hit high can be blocked simply by holding block (standing or crouching). If your opponent crouches without blocking, your high attack will miss, passing over his head.
  • Mid: like high attacks, mid attacks can be blocked simply by holding block. However, your opponent will get hit by mid attacks if he crouches without blocking.
  • Low: you can only block low attacks by holding block while crouching.
  • Overhead: you can only block overhead attacks by holding block while standing.
  • Throw: cannot be blocked. However, you can crouch without blocking or you can escape by pressing a punch or a kick button (tech).

Mixing all those attacks in different ways (mix up) forces your opponent to guess how to defend. If he does it wrong, in some cases, you will be able to follow your attack with combos and cause high damage!

Movie Review – Zombieland

21 Jul

laura

by Laura

Hi folks, it’s movies time!!

The last movie I saw was ZombieLand. It was recommended by a friend, who – knowing that I like science-fiction – thought I would like this one, but he advised me: it’s a zombie movie but with a different approach. This different approach was Comedy. Can you believe it? A funny zombie movie?

cover-zombie

I know that sometimes Hollywood surprises us with a lot of bullshit and impossible things, even if such things don’t exist, like zombies. But I decided to give it a chance.

Zombieland is a kind of guy’s journal, with some personal rules that he developed after the virus breakout.

Here the comedy begins: all of us would think rules like “1. Get a gun; 2. Head Shot; 3. Get ammunition;… etc”. However, his rules are totally turned into avoiding conflict and contact with zombies as much as he can:

#1 Cardio: because we have to be able to run as much as possible from zombies.

#2 Double Tab: because you have to make sure that the zombie is really dead, so why not confirm it with a double shot, right?

#3 Beware of bathrooms: even when you need it very much, zombies won’t be kind and wait for you to finish your job in there…

#4 Wear seat belts: car accidents became too common, especially because you can run over a zombie or simple because they can appear right in front of you.

And a lot of other funny rules, but really useful ones.

So Columbus, the guy who is telling the story, is on his way to get to Columbia, Ohio, in order to find his parents and a land zombie-free. In the meantime, he meets a totally crazy guy named Tallahassee, whose hobby/skill is killing zombies! He uses the most different tools to kill them: from a huge gun to a Fiskars gardening tool and a banjo – used to attract zombies. Lol.

banjo

They also meet two girls – sisters – who are trying to reach an amusement park. As nobody trusts anybody, they kind of enter in a conflict between the two pairs. After solving their differences, they build a kind of family and stay together until they reach the amusement park. However, the sisters decided to go by themselves to the park and when they light up the toys, a huge horde of zombies appears.

Trying to get rid of them, the sisters ends up trapped on the tower toy, and suddenly the guys appear to rescue them.

Personal opinion: This movie wasn’t on my “to watch list”, but after a friend recommended it to me I decided to give it a shot. And I was really impressed with the way they treated the theme. I really enjoyed the comedy aspects of this movie and it is really good to just spend some time. I loved the scene with the banjo and other strange action shots they did together.
In the movie they didn’t show all of Columbus’ rules, but they say that he has 32 of them. Searching for them on the internet I found the list below. Enjoy reading it! And you should watch the movie if you feel like laughing about crazy zombie-killers.

“Guilty-pleasure movies should not be underestimated. I had a scary-fun-house blast at Zombieland, in which studly Woody Harrelson, nerdy Jesse Eisenberg, sexy Emma Stone and sunshiny Abigail Breslin roam a near-dead world kicking zombie ass.”Rolling Stone

Evolve

16 Jul

will

by Will

The evolution shadow is upon us. Since the beginning of our lives on earth we are constantly facing some kind of discovery and this adventure never ends. We will always be doing new researches, starting new ideas, teaching and learning something new. We get involved with new practices, people try to tell us how we should or shouldn’t be organising our tasks. Well, the meaning of this article will be (quite) the same, with one singular difference: you will be your master on this journey.

First things first, the motivation behind all of this evolution must be the right one. It sounds obvious but thinking about motivational purposes for your main focus should be done yourself. It’s not about the outside world, it’s not about your current job, social position, money or whatever, the focus should reside in your values. What does that mean? Everything you do against your beliefs will turn against you at some point. The stress level will increase, you will lose your focus, start procrastinating and as soon as you realise, everything will be just a memory or frustration.

Values move the next steps further than you can imagine. When based on a strong manifesto everything is possible. You will have a goal bigger than any kind of obstacle. The thing with values can be found all around some of the most influential bloggers, podcasters and leaders of our time. Some good examples are: always be honest, believe in something more important than yourself, share your knowledge, be kind… Find what are yours. In the end this exercise will be worthwhile, believe me.

It will be much easier with a couple of tools. Some of the concepts, some of them a kind of practice, the point is that you can read a lot about getting things done in a plethora of different manners. So, we have strong values, now what? Let’s pass to the next level. The (new) secret weapons of a ninja-esque productivity.

Let’s start the tools part with my favorite one, themes. I had my first contact with this methodology while reading a James Altucher article. I’m a big fan of him and totally recommend that you to check out his work. Well, the magic around themes is that you don’t need to put all of your attention on deadlines. There are, of course, things you need to finish in a certain amount of time, the rule of not doing that applies for almost everything though. The use of themes happens by imagining what you want to achieve in a different perspective, on a higher level perspective I would say. So, instead of creating huge lists of to-dos and keeping yourself stuck to them you should look for a context. For example, instead of: “Write an article about evolution in three days containing X and Y” it would be “Develop my writing” (yes, this is the article, the first one).

Following the tools for evolution we have our habits. The sometimes forgiven and underestimated habits make for one of the most extraordinary things in order to achieve a better life. It’s all about our brain. How is it possible for us to finish an important job, starting (for the 50th time) going to the gym, sending an important email or booking an appointment with the doctor if we keep waiting for the new episode of a TV series to finish? The bad habits will keep us moving towards our nightmares unless we start our counter-attack on them. It’s all about practice, it’s all about starting over and over again. Our brain works as a recording machine with the only difference being that you need to keep feeding it with the same subject to save the tape properly. My tip for this one is to read “The Power of the Habit” (Charles Duhigg) and “The Chimp Paradox” (Dr Steve Peters).

Last but not least, it’s time for emotional intelligence. If you didn’t get the chance to know Daniel Goleman`s work, this is it. If I could write about only one point of improvement for your life, it would be this. The Emotional Intelligence concept got its name relatively recently, but it’s an old and honorable concept. The definition of this term is based on self-awareness, being emphatic, knowing exactly what you are feeling and name it appropriately. Furthermore, these two simple words combined can change your career and life. I Imagine that we all need technical skills to get a new job, but what really matters after getting there is to improve in your emotional area.

evolve-ryu

In the end, there are no secrets. Just a lot of energy to be applied. There is discipline. There is failure and starting over and over again. After some time you find out that it’s ok to fail, it’s ok to not know all the answers. Don’t try to control everything, just do the best you can with yourself. Focus on self-improvement, it’ll take some time. The results will come and it’s all up to you. Life is too short to stand still. Create, use, be, relax… and always remember to smile.

I could not visit all the sets of the Breaking Bad show, but the ones I could, were amazing. It is a strange thing that you feel being at the same spot in which a TV show was recorded, especially if this show is one of your favourites. You can check out some of the places I managed to go, here:

highlights

Random experience: I had to print a document during my stay in Albuquerque and I went to a FedEx office to do it. They have printers with USB plugs so you can do it all by yourself. After finishing your job, you can also pay at the printer! Yes, it accepts credit card. Crazy Americans!

The city is ace, it is huge considering territory and it has no traffic jam. I was impressed about it. One of my favourite cities in these holidays I’ve spent in the US.

That was my short experience in New Mexico, guys. I hope you enjoyed your reading. See you in the next chapter!

Breaking Bad - Ramon Bad

You have probably heard about Breaking Bad TV series, am I right?

The story about a good man who teaches Chemistry in the high school and realizes his life is regular and boring. To get rid of it, he breaks bad and starts cooking crystal meth with Jesse Pinkman (which by the way loves the word beach) as his partner.

The most part of the show was filmed in Albuquerque – New Mexico (USA) using the city itself as scenarios and not internal studios.

As I really enjoyed Breaking Bad, I had put on itinerary that lovely and warm (at least during the day) capital in the middle of the desert.

The house I stayed for one night (AirBNB really works)

The house I stayed for one night (AirBNB really works)

The only thing I searched about the city before arriving there was a map containing all the places the show was recorded in. In case you are curious about it, here is the link.

I arrived in the city around 1 a.m. after a 6 hours driving from Grand Canyon Park (I am going to tell more on the next posts) so the only thing I could think about was a good bed to sleep.

After a good (not too long though) sleep, I woke up and my first stop was Albuquerque’s Old Town. This neighborhood has been there since Albuquerque city was born in 1706. It has more than 100 shops, restaurants and galleries. Suspended peppers are everywhere in there.

Between the stores corridors

Between the stores corridors

I have met the real Heisenberg. “He” is actually a “she”, and she owns a candy store. In fact, the methamphetamine used in the show is a candy made by miss Debbie Ball, the Candy Landy’s owner.

The real Heisenberg (this was not what I imagined to be honest)

The real Heisenberg (this was not what I imagined to be honest)

The Candy Lady shop sells many kinds of chocolates including sugar free ones, candies, sweets and of course meth. It has a room within it where regular people like me take pictures pretending they are drug dealers.

What about now? Has Ramon bought some candies home?

To be continued…

There is something that happens only in the football’s country “Brazil”.

There are some places in Brazil that suffer a lot during the summer with rain and flood. In some of these places, people were suffering from losing their houses, clothing and sometimes even food, but one thing hurt more (specially the children’s heart and hope): their football fields were flooded as well.

But as they are smart guys and the life without football means nothing, they’ve decided to make a new football field, a floating one, so they can play independently of the water level.

Would Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi play nicely in those pitches? Have you already seen any similar sport? If so, please leave your comment.

To conclude, remember, if the weather is not that good and it is raining, that is not an excuse to do not practice sports.

Hi writters! Have you read a big, boring and dull article yet? That kind of article which makes you tired? Normally written by Well (I hope not)? Moreover, looking at the positive side, do you know those articles which are pleasant, that get your attention and make you want to keep reading?

I bet the answer is yes for all the questions, apart from the articles written by Well. I am here to help you to write the latter type of texts. Meet the Hemingway App.

In short, let’s use their own words: “Hemingway App makes your writing bold and clear.” Their idea is pretty simple but it has a really good feature.

Basically you write (or copy) your text in their editor in the Write tab section:

hemingway-write-edit

and when you want to check your writing, check the Edit tab section. It will colour your text according to its issues. To show you the app working, take a look at their site explanation (pretty cool, isn’t it?).

Having shown their own explanation, I put the first sentence of this post to the test and this is the result:

That is it for today and I hope it helps you. Give it a try! And I am eagerly waiting for new posts…

Formula 1 – It’s all about time

Hi everyone,

This is the first post of a series that I’m planning to present you, because definitely this is my favorite sport.

Are you ready? Fasten you seat belts and…

“It’s lights out and away we go!”

[David Croft, Formula 1 commentator]

Formula One or simply F1, had its first world drivers’ championship back on 13th of May, 1950. This format was planned in 1930 but it was shelved because of the World War II. One of the main goals of F1 at that time was to become a global sport, and since its beginning all the 7 rounds took place in some famous race tracks like Britain, Monaco, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Italy and the United States.

It’s important to say that this was the beginning of considerable technological advances from the greatest car manufacturers that we know today, such as Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Maserati, Lotus, McLaren, Talbot (Peugeot), Lancia and Mercedes-Benz.

I can also mention that great drivers have performed historical races and battles along all these years. The first important name was Juan Manuel Fangio and, believe me, he was an awesome Argentinian driver. Some nicknamed him as ‘El Maestro’ or ‘The Master’. He dominated the first decade of Formula 1 by winning 5 consecutive World Drivers’ Championships.

I have a big list of names here that I’m going to discuss in the following blog posts. This list includes Giuseppe Farina (the first Formula 1 Champion), Enzo Ferrari, Alberto Ascari, Jack Brabham, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti, Niki Lauda, Gilles Villeneuve, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Gerhard Berger, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, Mika Häkkinen, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.

Over the years, F1 changed its format, always trying to maintain the competition on track. There were times where the cars looked something like the pre-World War II supercharged engines defined by engine capacity, after Mercedes introduced the front-engined cars and later the British brought the rear-mid engined revolution: no one was able to beat this engine.

The engine evolution continues until today, F1 also had turbo-charged engines, aspirated engines, active suspension, V6, V8, V10 engines… Every year manufacturers try to build the best new engine according to F1 regulation in order to get a higher performance spending a lower amount of money.

Safety was always one of the major issues in F1. Fourteen drivers died in just one decade. Along with engine power, safety is important and crucial in a race. The last death was 21 years ago and since then teams, drivers and track owners put safety in first place.

The race schedule

The race show occurs on Sundays but all the preparations begin on Thursdays of the same week. The first two days are for practicing only, Saturday is the qualifying day and it’s when each driver runs for the best lap time in order to get the pole position (first place on the grid).

Finally, we have the race day. All the drivers run for the win and, I can tell you, starting in first position does not mean that the driver can win the race easily. The same applies when the driver starts in last position. Every race is unique!

Today we have the competition between drivers and constructors, where the teams compete for best engine focusing on car performance, sponsorship and, of course, money for the next season. At the end of every race, the ten fastest drivers score points for them and their teams. These points vary for each position and every single one is crucial until the end of the championship.

In the next blog posts, I will present you some new vocabulary, drivers, teams, rules & regulations, race tracks and every nice curiosity that is worth to say and mention for all of you.

For me, this video explains what is a Formula 1 race. I hope you enjoy 😉

Thank you all, have a great lap time and see you at the podium!
